Produced by Blackbird Presents, Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 Live At The Hollywood Bowl is the definitive music release of the star-studded concerts celebrating Willie’s 90th Birthday. The concerts were recorded live on April 29 & 30, 2023 at the legendary Hollywood Bowl and features once-in-a-lifetime performances by Willie Nelson along with scores of artists spanning genres and generations. The Lumineers’ version of Willie’s “Pretty Paper” is already included on the physical (2CD+Blu-ray and 2XLP Highlights Volume I vinyl) and digital editions that released in December, but now their amazing rendition of “A Song For You” will be added to the digital version, bringing the number of tracks to 54 songs and well over 3 hours. Listen the whole expanded edition of the album HERE.
Written by Leon Russell, “A Song For You” was released on his 1970 debut album. It had already been famously covered by the likes of Donny Hathaway and The Carpenters by the time Willie included a solo acoustic version on his 1973 classic album Shotgun Willie. Willie brought an even deeper intimacy to the pained plea of a song and made it his own, going on to perform it again in the 1980 movie Honeysuckle Rose. Nelson and Russell became good friends and collaborators, releasing a collaboration album in 1979 and performing together many times throughout the decades. The Lumineers’ successfully channel that intimacy in their moving rendition of the song, delivering a highlight of the two-night celebration at the Hollywood Bowl.
Previously withheld from the theatrical, broadcast and home video versions of the project, the video is finally available today. Watch the video of The Lumineers performing “A Song For You” HERE.
