In celebration of Hip Hop’s 50th birthday, Mass Appeal, Google Pixel and Sony Music Entertainment’s Certifiedare excited to elevate female voices in Hip Hop through the ‘Pixel RePresents’ content series, where Hip Hop’s most promising female artists will reimagine classic tracks. Kicking off today, New York rap star Lola Brooke will release “Blind Em” (listen HERE)  – her new interpretation of Clipse’s smash hit “Grindin.”  The artwork for the single was photographed using a Google Pixel camera, with Real Tone technology that more accurately highlights all skin tones.

“Fifty years of Hip Hop— it’s an honor to be called on by Google and Mass Appeal to celebrate the culture this way,” said Lola Brooke. From reinterpreting one of my favorite records Grindin’ by Clipse to capturing all the magic on a Google Pixel phone, every part felt like a celebration. It’s dope to see how it all came out, and I’m happy to have gotten the chance to create art that I can always look back on and cherish. “

Following Lola Brooke’s release, additional female artists will take their turns reimagining some of Hip Hop’s most enduring hits from SME’s extensive catalog. To accompany the single, each artist will release a BTS video created on a Google Pixel by director and Creator Labs artist, Myesha Evon Gardner. EBONY.com will serve as the central hub for all RePresents BTS content. The individual releases will all culminate in the Pix Tape EP, which is slated to be released in August alongside the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop.

It’s impossible to look retrospectively at the most influential movement of the past 50 years and not acknowledge the contribution of Women to Hip Hop’s popularity, style, and relevance. With lyricism, sex appeal, and swag, women in Hip Hop have busted through gender lines and commanded respect. With these reimagined versions of classic hits, the female emcees, up now, stake their claim in today’s sound announcing how far Hip Hop and society have come.

Pixel RePresents is part of Mass Appeal’s Hip Hop 50 initiative, a global, multifaceted landmark celebration to commemorate Hip Hop’s bicentennial. Beyond Pixel RePresents, Mass Appeal has tapped Google Pixel to be the exclusive handset device for Hip Hop 50.
