Jazz Moods - Cool
By no means a greatest hits or career-spanning sampler, this installment of the Jazz Moods: Cool series focuses on sessions during the late '50s and early '60s, a time of great productivity and evolution for Miles Davis While Davis went through phases of experimentation (one of the few constants in a career filled with innovation, turbulence, and conflict), this is a relatively calm look at the cooler side of Davis more traditional output, with quite a heavy emphasis on standards that became staples of his live performances during this period. While there is great debate among rabid fans and seasoned scholars as to whether or not this was Davis most fertile and innovative period, it's inarguable that the performances found here showcase Davis playing with assured confidence and true passion. At an economically reasonable price, this is a nice starting point for people looking to get their feet wet in the ocean of sound that Davis left in his wake. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
